The Best Wines to Enjoy in the Province of Frosinone

Lazio is a region that boasts not only a millennia-old cultural heritage but also a rich culinary and winemaking tradition that has always captivated visitors. In this article, we will explore the best wines to enjoy in the province of Frosinone, focusing particularly on two gems of the local wine culture: Cesanese del Piglio and Cabernet di Atina.

Certified I.G.T. Wines

The province of Frosinone is home to several controlled designation wines, among which Cesanese del Piglio and Cabernet di Atina stand out as the crown jewels of local wine production. Alongside these, there are three other notable wine productions certified with the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (I.G.T.): Lazio IGT, Frusinate IGT, and Anagni IGT.

  • Lazio IGT: This designation includes white, red, rosé, and dessert wines produced exclusively with grapes grown in the Lazio region. Lazio IGT offers a wide range of choices, from fresh sparkling whites to structured reds and enveloping dessert wines.
  • Frusinate IGT: This designation includes a variety of wines made from grapes such as Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Passerina, Malvasia, and others. The production area extends throughout the entire province of Frosinone, showcasing the diverse enological nuances of the region.
  • Anagni IGT: A more recent designation that includes both white and red wines produced within the municipality of Anagni. The permitted grape varieties range from Passerina and Malvasia for whites to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Cesanese di Affile for reds.

The Crown Jewel: Cesanese del Piglio D.O.C.G.

Cesanese del Piglio, a red wine with an ancient tradition, has been awarded the highest recognition with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (D.O.C.G.). Produced in the municipalities of Piglio, Serrone, Anagni, Acuto, and Paliano, this wine is distinguished by its deep ruby red color with violet reflections.

Cesanese del Piglio is available in different styles, from the standard type to the prestigious Cesanese del Piglio Superiore, which is labeled Riserva if aged for more than 18 months. Characterized by a floral and fruity bouquet, this wine pairs beautifully with traditional dishes from the Frosinone area, such as oven-roasted lamb or grilled meats.

Cabernet di Atina D.O.C.

Cabernet di Atina, a full-bodied and velvety wine, carries with it the tradition of Cabernet cultivation, which began in the Comino Valley in 1860. This wine is known for its ruby red color and intense aromas of red fruit with herbal notes.

The production area of Cabernet di Atina is located in the province of Frosinone, encompassing the municipalities of Atina, Gallinaro, Belmonte Castello, Picinisco, Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, Alvito, Villa Latina, San Donato Val di Comino, Vicalvi, Casalattico, Casalvieri, and Settefrati.

Perfectly suited for pairing with traditional dishes, this wine harmonizes exceptionally well with the bold flavors of locally aged cheeses.

Native Grape Varieties: Passerina, Maturano, and More

Beyond the most renowned wines, the province of Frosinone also boasts native grape varieties that enrich its winemaking heritage. Passerina del Frusinate I.G.T., one of the historic white wines of the region, has a straw-yellow color and a fruity bouquet with hints of green apple and fresh straw.

Maturano Bianco, along with grape varieties such as Capolongo, Lecinaro, and Pampanaro, represents a rediscovered viticultural heritage in recent years. These native varieties, cultivated by many wineries in the area, produce wines characterized by mineral and fruity notes.

The province of Frosinone is a land of outstanding food and wine, offering high-quality wines and typical products that tell the story and passion of its people. Every sip of our wines takes you on a journey through the culture and tradition of this fascinating land.
